The storage process begins the moment you purchase onions. Opt for firm, unblemished onions, as those that are soft or have visible signs of sprouting are more prone to spoilage.  

Whole onions, especially the dry ones, should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Ideal temperatures range between 40°F and 50°F (4°C to 10°C). The pantry or a cellar is often a good place to keep them.  

While it’s tempting to store onions in the fridge, especially in hot weather, refrigeration is not ideal for whole onions. Cold and humid conditions cause onions to absorb moisture, which leads to softening and the development of mold.
